How do I apply for Canadian Citizenship?

In order to apply for citizenship, you should meet particular eligibility criteria and submit an application.

Eligibility Criteria

For Canadian citizenship, you should:

1. Have evidence that you know how to speak and write in one of Canada’s official languages which are either English or French.

2. Be a Permanent Resident of Canada

3. Have resided in Canada as a Permanent Resident (PR) for a minimum of 1,095 days out of the five years prior to your application

4. Have filed your taxes for a minimum of 3 years in the last five years and any income tax you have should be paid

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will reject your application if you do not send appropriate evidence that you have sufficient knowledge of English or French.

How do i apply for Canadian Citizenship

The applicant should either be a Canadian citizen or apply to become a Canadian citizen. Minors may not need to meet the residency requirement.

If either of your parents was a Canadian citizen when you were born, you are already a citizen.

In order to be a Canadian citizen, you should apply for proof of citizenship.

You are not eligible to be a Canadian citizen if you have been in prison, on probation or parole.

If you are serving a conditional sentence or convicted of a crime, you are not eligible to be a Canadian citizen. You cannot apply for Canadian citizenship if you are under a deportation order.

Application Process

1. Download and fill the forms in the Canadian Citizen Application Package for yourself and your children.

2. Include all supporting documents.

3. Pay for the application fee.

4. Send your application through the mail to the Centralized Intake Office (CIO) in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney.

Do I need to write the test?

If your application is accepted, you need to write a citizenship test.

Children who are under the age of 18 years and adults whose age is 54 or above do not need to write the citizenship test.

Why am I being to provide fingerprints?

You may be asked to give fingerprints or court documents when you apply for citizenship.

This is to ensure that you are not forbidden through the Citizenship Act.
